Have a Happy New Year

It's been a wild, crazy, busy time lately. A few things have been happening, both good and bad, but it's called life.

First and foremost, I hope you have a Happy New Year!

2012 has been interesting. I'm ready for 2013.

Recently I made a few changes...
Zack Skyler has been a name that I've used in my media world for over 20 years. I began using that name, while in high school, working at a radio station in Wabash called WAYT. They had a guy with my name working there and using that name on the air. The name: David Eppley. It was at that moment in 1989 that I began using Zack Skyler as my air name. It's a name I've used throughout my whole radio career since, due to mainly Program Directors liking the Zack Skyler name and it just stuck. I used it while doing some tv work in Indy, while doing radio work in Fort Wayne during the 90's. I'd go to Indy over weekends and shoot these tv shows, specials, programs, marathons etc. A lot of fun stuff. I did the radio work in Fort Wayne through the week. That was in the 90's. A fun period in my life. I would have used my real name from the beginning, but again, it was a change I had to make. It beings me to the change I am making now. Zack is David/David is Zack. It's just a name. My personality is the same. I feel like now, I'd rather just use my real name. So, I scrapped my Zack Skyler Facebook page and posted a link to my David Eppley page, so those that wanted to go with me there could. Some did, some did not. I'm using my Twitter with my real name @DavidAEppley. Basically, it's still the same me, but now with my name.

I'm not sure I'm going to do radio, television or anything else in media again. I have a real love/hate thing with much of it. It's the thing, besides my family...kids, folks etc., that I have always had such a passion for. My feelings aren't the same as they we're when it was something I wanted to do, but I still care about it.

Most of my time over the years has been in Fort Wayne working. I spent many years in Orlando and a some time in Minneapolis. I enjoyed it all. I came back to Indiana, due to my folks and they needed help from me. It's a health thing. I care about all those around me and family is number one.

I'm not sure what 2013 will bring, but I know I will be hoping for the best and prepare for the worst. I love life and try to be real, honest, fun and treat people well who treat me well.

I had a nice Christmas and have been kinda quiet via all of my social media networks, including this one. My Pop has been going through some tough stuff with his health and my mind has been on focusing on family. I think anyone would understand. I hope so anyway.

I wish you happiness.

Happy New Year!

Top 40 Radio

Great look at CHR/Top 40 Radio via Radio-Info.com.

I am a firm believer in true radio PERSONALITIES. I miss 'em! Some still do it and well and others have given up on it. Radio should EMBRACE personalities. THEY help set YOU a part from others. It used to be that radio's competition was other radio stations and tv etc. Now, there's a million other distractions from radio. You HAVE to make it matter and be entertaining.

Anyway, enough my thoughts. Here's the story.

Awesome

Fall TV Report Card

Many of the artists have a nice following. It exposes me to some great stuff.

Best & Worst of TV 2012

BEST & WORST OF TELEVISION 2012

My favorites of the year include:

FX's Sons of Anarchy! Kurt Sutter has one wicked mind. I think the storylines and characters, twists & turns have been incredible and amazing. It's my #1 above all.

HBO's Boardwalk Empire starring Steve Buscemi. I think it's grown a lot this season. I've enjoyed it from season one and think this time is even better.

AMC's The Walking Dead. A favorite among many of my friends and I enjoy it too. Plenty of shockers here too.

Showtime's Homeland. The Emmy winning hit is interesting. Well done. It's not my favorite, BUT I do like it. Clare Danes is excellent.

When it comes to the TV Nets:

B E S T

CBS: I really enjoy Elementary. It's a keeper.
Vegas is great, but I think it's in a tough spot.

ABC: Last Resort is the big one of the season imo. A hit! It's a keeper.
Nashville is quite popular. It's not my thing, but people dig it.

NBC: Revolution is one of those watercooler shows. This program has an interesting
storyline. I do like this one quite a bit. It's a keeper.

FOX: Although I've been a fan of FOX projects over the years...24, Simpsons,
Family Guy, Touch etc. Nothing really stands out to me. Not yet. The Following
starring Kevin Bacon is on the way and looks intriguing.

W O R S T

Any and all of the reality crap. I am DONE with that. Enough already.

Angry Birds: Star Wars

I've liked all of the Angry Birds games and Angry Birds: Star Wars may be tops!

I LOVE it!!

Alexa Vega!

Alexa Vega is S E X Y!

This is from Machete Kills!!

Best & Worst of 2012 Music & Movies

It's the BEST & WORST of 2012 Music & Movies...so far anyway.

This is according to me. It's only my opinion.

For the record, when it comes to both music AND movies, I like all genres and styles, so I try not to be an entertainment snob in what I might discuss. For instance, I really dig a lot of indie music and heck, even independent movies too, but I don't always talk about them. Most indie fans DESPISE anything mass appeal or pop or mainstream. I get it, but I like many things. I will also say, there IS a lot of crap pushed in entertainment and pop culture. I've always said, just because something is a hit, doesn't mean it's good. It could be a horrible piece of really bad crap, BUT people like that. They DO and you KNOW it. Ugh.

BEST MUSIC

Mumford & Sons Babel.
I listen to it a lot. It just gets better.

Of Monsters And Men's My Head Is An Animal.
Masterpiece. Really.

Bruce Springsteen's Wrecking Ball.
I'm a fan of The Boss. I enjoy this album. I just wish he didn't talk politics so much.

Madonna's MDNA.
I think they screwed up with that first single...however, MDNA has some decent pop stuff. It probably hasn't gotten the "hits" out of it that it deserves. Superstar could be a hit imo.

Prince's R&R Affair.
The single R&R Affair is fantastic. Classic Prince, but fresh too.

Adele's Skyfall.
The music from the movie. I'm not the biggest Adele fan, but I dig it.

Van Halen's A Different Kind of Truth.
I was expecting something either excellent or garbage. It was something closer to excellent. Growing up loving hard rock (and still do), I liked this a lot.

WORST MUSIC
Psy's Gangnam Style.
Now THIS is what I mean by crap. Oh, it might be catchy, but it SUCKS and those of you who bought it on iTunes etc. will say you never liked it later. That's how it goes.

I could add a lot more, but I will pass.

BEST MOVIES

The Avengers starring Chris Evans & company.
I enoyed it a lot. Probably one of my favorite Superhero type flicks ever.

Wes Anderson's Moonrise Kingdom.
Excellent work. Great film!

The Amazing Spiderman starring Andrew Garfield.
It was different, but great in it's own way.

Skyfall starring Daniel Craig.
I went to an advanced screening in Indy for this. Outstanding!

The Dark Knight Rises starring Christian Bale.
I liked it quite a bit, but due to circustances, it wasn't as big as the others.

WORST MOVIES
Battleship starring Taylor Kitsch & Rihanna.
Garbage, period.

I could add a lot more, but I will pass.

Pop Life this week

Notable tv series for the week includes: NBC's tv pilot for The Munsters-esque Mockingbird Lane. It will be one time only shot. I realize everything old is new again, but FUCK, Hollywood can you PLEASE not remake stuff that shouldn't be remade. Some things are great. Leave 'em alone you whores. :)

Music this week: Taylor Swift's Red, Colbie Caillat with a Christmas album, Black Moth Super Rainbow, Bat For Lashes The Haunted Man and Stone Sour's House of Gold and Bones.

Movies this week: Cloud Atlas starring Tom Hanks & Halle Berry, Silent Hill: Revelation 3D and Chasing Mavericks.

It could be an interesting read...Tom Wolfe's Back To Blood!!

State of TV

I'm a television fan.

I love many things, but think some things really stink. I might even hate some stuff.

The broadcast television networks are fighting for anything that resembles a hit. Let's look at each tv net.

CBS: NCIS starring Mark Harmon is a monster. Great tv series and one of my favorites. CSI, Criminal Minds and a few others really make them, for the most part, a fantastic place. Elementary and Vegas are a couple that I am enjoying now.

ABC: They had a nice streak for a while with Desperate Housewives and Grey's Anatomy. One is gone and the other isn't what it was. Last Resort starring Andre Braugher has some great potential and people seem to like it. I know I do.

NBC: It's the final hoorah for The Office. The peacock needs some help. Revolution has people talking. I kinda dig it. We will see.

FOX: American Idol is wobbly. X-Factor is whatever. I am looking forward to The Following starring Kevin Bacon. It might be one of the better things for FOX.

Let's talk news. The tv nets news divisions well, blow. ABC is the best of the bunch. I do think Diane Sawyer does a fine job. Jake Tapper is the top gun covering politics in a zero bullshit manner. CBS is alright in some spots, but very biased in many ways. NBC just sucks, biased beyond belief. I'm not sure if they will EVER fix their approach to news. Probably not.

Sports. Alright, Al Michaels is always fantastic and a few others, but my main issue with the sports boradcasts is the announcing is horrid.

Cable is KING. FX's Sons of Anarchy is the greatest thing going. AMC's The Walking Dead is a fun one. HBO's Boardwalk Empire is a beer we should all drink.

Television puts so much garbage out there. Part of it is the American appetite for crap. Reality tv needs to go...anytime would be nice. I'm over it.

I love tv. I hate the bullshit.

Pop Life This Week

Notable tv series for the week: AMC's The Walking Dead returns! ABC's Nashville starring Connie B. & Hayden P. debuts. The CW has a few debuts, including Arrow and some of their season premieres.

Music & Movies for the week:
The Script's #3.
Ellie Goulding's Halcyon.
Kiss Monster.
Jeff Lynne's Long Wave.
The Wallflowers Glad All Over.

Argo starring Ben Affleck.
Seven Psychopaths with Christopher Walken.
Sinister starring Ethan Hawke.
Here Comes The Boom with Kevin James.

Ramblings, Bursting From My Brain

I hope you liked my post on the State of Radio. The State of TV is in a week. Just my thoughts and have been for some time...I really dig the latest Mumford & Sons...Traveling can be fun and I've done a lot recently. New York and Los Angeles over the next week and a half. Fortunately, I'm not paying, which makes me happy...Komets season is about to begin and I can't wait. I've been helping the Komets with some stuff recently...I caught the Lemmy documentary on VH1 Classic. I've always thought Motorhead is one of the greatest true, rock bands, ever and Lemmy is the man...The first Presidential debate is this week. Such a slimy game...Colts off over the weekend, back on this week and I hope for a huge win...The music and movie business, BUSINESS, not the performers, would be better if they weren't so LAZY and greedy on many levels...Twitter is my favorite among social media and one of my favorite things is Maxim's Hot Pic At Noon. Follow @MaximMag and you'll see what I mean. Oh, and if you wanna follow me, it's @ZSkyler...Congrats to Ryan Elijah from Indiana's News Center, who's moving on to Orlando's FOX affiliate WOFL. Great spot. FOX is located in Lake Mary, which is a beautiful place. I loved my time in Orlando. I wish Ryan great times...Live it up and own your time, it's yours.

State of Radio

STATE OF RADIO

My love for radio began as a kid, it struck a nerve and I’ve liked it ever since. It became and still is a huge passion for me. My first radio job was at 14 and I’ve loved every moment ever since and it’s been years, a lot of years. There’s been good times and bad, but my passion never really waned. Through it all, I’ve learned many life lessons.

What I’m about to discuss is my thoughts on radio. It’s like trying to get through to a family member or help a friend. Intervention would be a nice way to describe it. Like many things in entertainment: television, music and movies…nothing is like it used to be. There’s still decent stuff, but if we’re being truly honest, the only things that have gotten better are technology and porn. Well, radio isn’t like it used to be either. Now, before some say who’s this fossil talking? There are some great things at radio, a few, but not many. You KNOW it too. You could be thinking a few words…jaded, bitter. Not really. I love my life and just care about radio, which has been a huge part of me forever.

As a kid, I studied and learned from the greatest radio personalities and the finest radio stations in many different formats on the planet. Just by paying attention and I got a hold of airchecks every month. I was going to school. A few of the people and places…Howard Stern, Scott Shannon, Rick Dees, Human Numan, Alan Kabel, Bubba The Love Sponge, Johnny B., Kevin Matthews, Jojo Kincaid, Greg Thunder, Z100, KIIS, WPLJ, KROQ. I could go on forever. They’re all very different, but they’re ALL entertaining in their own way.

Management folk always say, where do we find the talent? Well, how about the making radio exciting again. FUN, REAL, HONEST E N T E R T A I N I N G!!!! Kids today, MOST, not all, don’t give a shit about radio. You know it’s true. There’s a few kids that are still into it and would love to do it, but like it used to be. Now, WHY is that? There’s many other choices sure and we’ll get to that, but the main thing is radio just doesn’t grab them and make them care. If you want to make a difference, you can’t just be a dj, you’ve GOT to be a personality. Evoke emotion. Share your life. When you crack that mic open, give the people SOMETHING WORTHWHILE…something funny, interesting, informative, but always entertaining. I had a PD recently of a cluster tell me that his stations we’re the best in the market. I thought, he MUST be insane. The talent at the stations this guy ran, rarely said anything interesting. It was the typical dj stuff of… “that was, this is.” Plus, his stations didn’t make the most money. So on both counts…programming and sales…not happening. I just smiled at him. Why vaporize him with the truth. MAKE PEOPLE WANT TO CARE. Once you do this, the people will grow in your audience. There’s many factors to stuff, but this would really help.

I’ve never seen such tight ass idiocy than I have over the recent years. It keeps getting worse. I would love to see it get better, but this is a huge problem. Management doesn’t know how to deal with money, so heads get chopped like a holiday. It’s an annual thing. Oh sure, there’s the economy sucking, but this sucking began LONG before that. It might fix your bottom line now, but you are KILLING the business and your radio station’s future life. Clusterfuck USA! Management thoughts are like…. “We gotta get our budget in line” (which they screwed up to begin with), “We can replace so & so with this person and pay them peanuts,” (sure you can and they stink…and then you wonder what happened later), “Let’s have King Kong voicetrack 10 stations across the country,” (King Kong may be talented, but this is a shit storm) etc. Money makes the world go round and it’s something we all like. It’s just that the radio business, much like the U.S. Government, doesn’t have a freakin’ CLUE how to truly deal with cash. It might help if they knew how to deal with people.

What’s the #1 thing? What comes out of the speakers. THE RADIO! Not the website, not Facebook, not Twitter, not Pinterest. Social media networks are important, but radio sometimes makes it seem like THAT is the #1 thing. It is NOT. It MIGHT be to your web person. “We gotta get our hits up!” Oh, fuck! The website is important, however pictures, video & audio on the web doesn’t matter if you’re radio station SUCKS. Work on the #1 thing FIRST! Make every moment on your radio station MATTER. You MUST do it. The times of just radio competitors are over. We have radio, tv, people playing music, tv, movies on their devices, video games, Pandora, Spotify, iTunes etc.

I feel much better expressing myself about something that means the world to me…radio. Media is constantly changing and that can be great and I accept it, HOWEVER, sometimes media doesn’t work on what is TRULY important, because they are so concerned with saving their ass at the expense of people and QUALITY entertainment. That way of thinking will get you killed in the future. Television is hurting from the tv nets to the stations. Newspapers are nearly dead. The music and movie business has moments of excellence and then periods of WTF!?!

Radio, your bags are packed, the flight is ready. It’s time for you to leave for your rehab. Will you go? Probably not. I hope it works out for you.

Pop Life

September 17th, 2012

Notable tv series for the week-FOX's Bones and NBC's The Office both return, plus NBC's Revolution debuts, as well as FOX's The Mob Doctor. I'm intrigued by Revolution, but some tv critics hate, while some love it. As with all of us, tastes vary.

Barbara Walters will host TV's Best In TV: The Greatest TV Shows Of Our Time on Tuesday during ABC's 20/20. If it was up to me, my choices for the best in tv: the greatest tv shows of our time would be...HBO's The Sopranos, Boardwalk Empire, SOA, 24, Home Improvement, Seinfeld, Frasier and a few others. Get more on this tv special of sorts here.

This is a great week to be a music and movie fan, as there is quite a lot of stuff. The music includes-Pink's The Truth About Love, Carly Rae Jepsen's Kiss, The Killers Battle Born, Dinosaur Jr.'s I Bet On Sky, Ben Folds Five's The Sound of the Life of the Mind, Aimee Mann's Charger, Band of Horses Mirage Rock, Rival Sons Head Down and many others. The movies include-Dredd starring Karl Urban, End of Watch with Jake Gylenhaal, The Trouble With The Curve starring Clint Eastwood and The Master with Joaquin Phoenix.

Got Beer? The Dirty Jobs guy, Mike Rowe, is going to host the Discovery Channel tv special, How Booze Built America. It airs Wednesday. I do love beer.

Bestselling author, Ken Follett, releases his book called, Winter of the World, this week.

Jimmy Kimmel hosts the Primetime Emmy Awards this week on ABC. I'm a Jimmy Kimmel fan and really looking forward to the David Letterman and Jay Leno showdown in January. Here's a clip from a while back of Jimmy talking about Fort Wayne late great legend, Harry Baals, which Kimmel did often. Billy Dee Williams had fun with Harry Baals...

Ramblings, Bursting From My Brain

Sons of Anarchy season premiere blew my mind, especially the Tig scene. Holy crap...Happy the Colts beat the Vikings...Honesty wins, lying loses, although it doesn't always seem that way...The first Presidential debate could be good or bad, but for sure, ugly...Kathleen Robertson as Kitty on Boss is so damn hot...I care way too much, FUCK...If the NHL really has a lockout, that would be really dumb...Having OCD really sucks...HBO's Boardwalk Empire season premiere, fantastic...I've had all I can take, but not all that I want...David Carr's The Night of the Gun is a great read...I've got a huge heart, it makes me who I am, but it also makes things hurt more...Playing the drums is one of my great escapes...I know bullshit, so don't try it on me...Kissing rocks...I really hope World War III isn't approaching...There's a fine line between pleasure & pain...Do it your way.

Z-Man TV, Radio Podcasts & Pop Life

Hey! I'm very excited to be doing a few things on my own. While I talk with people and figure out what's next in my media/radio/tv/broadcasting career, I'm going to enjoy myself and it will include the following: Z-Man TV, Radio Podcasts & Pop Life.

Z-Man TV
This will be me & some friends, family and the adventures of our lives...the good, the bad, the ugly and sometimes dumb.

Z-Man Radio Podcasts
This will be me talking about what's on my mind, what we're all talking about, giving you my thoughts on anything and everything.

Both will be entertainment personified...Real. Fun. Honest. I'll talk tv, music, movies and yeah, the radio biz during both Z-Man TV and the Radio Podcast. TRUTH.

POP LIFE
Pop Life is this particular blog you're looking at now. I'll stick fun stuff that I enjoy on this page and probably once a week, do a weekly blog Pop Life column covering my thoughts on tv, music, movies etc. Now, I'll still do stuff every day and/or night too...pic here, audio there, video here etc. I've got another entertainment blog, TVMusicandMovies.Blogspot.com, which I've had for years. You might like that one too. This thing will really "OFFICIALLY" debut (in my mind) on Monday, September 17th.
